This is my fourth Garmin wrist device and I couldn't be happier. Every couple of years I look to an upgrade that won't break the bank and the 735XT fit the bill. My past devices have been primarily used for running. However, the 735XT provides me the opportunity to easily expand that to biking and swimming.
The race was a 102 km ultra trail race with a total ascent of 4200 m, cut-off time set at 16 h (I had an ambitious plan to finish it in less than 13 h), and ambient temperature to be expected at 15-20C. Formerly I participated in other ultra races, none that long, however. This was my first race with the FR735XT.

For the same reason it does not have million other features that are available on later models. The reason is actually totally irrelevant. Whatever the reason is, it won't help you get the virtual run feature to the FR735XT. Garmin decides which features are available on particular devices, probably based on business calculations.
The Forerunner 745 replaces the venerable Forerunner 735XT. I bought a Forerunner 735XT in 2017 and used it for 5 years before replacing it with the Forerunner 745 and despite the model number only increasing by 10 this is a significantly different watch.
